My Own Faux Mercury Glass

Who does not love mercury glass?
I am so getting this for my kitchen
 It adds layers to decor.

A mercury glass candle holder
Mercury glass is both expensive and hard to find.  I found a blog with a tutorial providing instructions for making your own mercury glass at home.  I like a challenge.  I like to avoid housework.

It was off to Value Village for a pair of matching vases.  The tutorial recommended mirror spray paint, we picked that up and a spray bottle for vinegar (it eats the paint a bit and makes it look old.)

They started as clear vases. And yes, I forgot to take a picture of them before I got going on transforming them.

These are the vases with two coats of spray paint and some vinegar.

They did not look vintage enough, so I took some super fine steel wool to the insides to remove a bit more of the silver spray paint.

And here they are done with a bit of black paint to make them look old.

What do you think?  There is lots of silver spray paint left, if you would like one, let me know.  I think I followed the tutorial pretty well!  Send me a note and let me know what you think.

Volunteer Week - Boys and Girls Club of Durham

I vision this blog to be about my crafting obsession with some crochet and some sewing thrown in.

Annual Walk a thon, Rebekah, me, Oshawa Mayor John Henry
Sorry - today's blog has to be about the Boys and Girls Club of Durham and the very nice thing they did for me this week.  I was rather touched.

About a month ago I received a letter in the mail from the Ministry of the Attorney General.  Ian's first response was, "Wah, what did you do?"  I almost threw it out.  Turns out is was an invitation to the Volunteer Recognition Event held annually in communities across the province.  About 300 other Durham Region volunteers were going to be recognized for their community commitment.

Annual Gala
I don't volunteer to be recognized,  I do it because I think that just like the Club's slogan, it is a GREAT place to be.  If there is some small contribution that I can make to the club to keep it great, that is why I show up at meetings, clean up after terrifying camels during the annual walk a thon, and provide booze for the chariot of cheer.  Yes, they raffle of a wheel barrow of booze at the annual gala.  No joke.  This is totally my year.

I am but one of hundreds who contribute to the club.  I am glad to be counted as  one of their number.  There are so many, those who greet the kids as they come in the door to the after school program, those who make snacks each and every day, those who tend gardens, donate their expertise, be it in the creation of an accessible facility or teaching kids to read better.

Monday was a wonderful night to be surrounded by so many other community members and their organizations to celebrate volunteer milestones - Durham has dedicated volunteers - awards were handed out to those with five years, ten, 20, 25, 30 and even one with over 60 years of service!
Club Executive Director, Lisa McKnee Baker and me

If you do not volunteer somewhere, I recommend it.  Find a place you believe in and give your time.  You will get so much in return.  Leave me a note and tell me if you have volunteered.

Can't Wait for Fall

Spring is barely a week old, summer a dream away and already I am planning for fall.  A few reasons:  I have allergies.  To outside.  I love spring, I love summer.  My body has decided that they are dangerous and freaks out when someone cuts the grass or when the flowers bloom.  Don't put me near an evergreen tree!  I live for fall.  The first frost that kills all things summer makes me feel so much better.  Sorry.

I also have a scholarship to Ryerson University.  I am pretty proud of that.  There have been some major changes at work and I have taken on a new leadership role. That has meant that I have taken some time away from my studies.  That and I really want to take a degree/certificate something in economics (I have issues) but I need to learn algebra.  Enter youtube.  I am going to resume my studies in the fall.

Wait for it and this is BIG news!!!  Jason  Mraz is coming to Toronto for a concert.  September 9th.  Please do not buy a ticket.  I want it to be small event.  Just Jason, me and Ian.  That is so not creepy.

He is touring in support of his new album, Love is a Four Letter Word.  It is, he is awesome and I am so excited.

Here is some music, and here is to anticipating fall.
