Rebekah's Room

My baby is going through a transformation.  She is now a teenager.  Gasp!  How did that happen?

When she was about eight, she looked at her dad with her big eyes and asked him to paint the ceiling in her room dark blue and the walls orange.  Seriously.  Do you remember those sherbet ice creams from Dickee Dee with the blue gumball at the bottom?  Those are the colours of her room. No, I am not posting pictures of  it. You can't make me.

Fast forward a few years and this baby of mine has finally realized that those colours suck.

my personal fav
I am addicted to Amy Butler fabric.  I mean so addicted that I will be attending if  there is a support group for Amy Bulter fabric addicts out there in blogland.

I had originally contemplated recovering my dining room chairs with some of her fabrics. They did not work for the living room, however, some of the Amy Butler will be finding its way to Rebekah's room. The only problem is that the fabric is difficult to get in Canada.  My source - fabric.com (not a paid endorsement, this is just a great site).  There is lots of Amy Butler to go around.  Take a look.

just a nice green cool fabric

Imagine, a cool room decked out with new curtains, a double bed, new desk and a few lounge chairs.  All of this accented by these Amy Butler fabrics.  I am off to kijji to find those book shelves, and some lounge chairs.  I have some sewing and painting to get at.

My Own Faux Mercury Glass

Who does not love mercury glass?
I am so getting this for my kitchen
 It adds layers to decor.

A mercury glass candle holder
Mercury glass is both expensive and hard to find.  I found a blog with a tutorial providing instructions for making your own mercury glass at home.  I like a challenge.  I like to avoid housework.

It was off to Value Village for a pair of matching vases.  The tutorial recommended mirror spray paint, we picked that up and a spray bottle for vinegar (it eats the paint a bit and makes it look old.)

They started as clear vases. And yes, I forgot to take a picture of them before I got going on transforming them.

These are the vases with two coats of spray paint and some vinegar.

They did not look vintage enough, so I took some super fine steel wool to the insides to remove a bit more of the silver spray paint.

And here they are done with a bit of black paint to make them look old.

What do you think?  There is lots of silver spray paint left, if you would like one, let me know.  I think I followed the tutorial pretty well!  Send me a note and let me know what you think.

To do this, you must have the patience of Job

Rebekah wants a new room.  No problem.  The components of this 'renovation' have been divided into manageable (read affordable) parts.  First up - closet renovation.

Rebekah wants to get rid of her dresser.  She wants to put everything in the closet.  I gather this is to allow for more floor space for the friends that seem to be coming to our house more and more.  Fine by me.

Ian took a trip to home depot to get her a closet organizer.  I should have taken a before photo of the closet because I remain doubtful that this closet will ever be organized....

We thought that since we were cleaning and renovating, that we should probably give the closet a fresh coat of paint since it probably had not be painted in ten years.  Don't judge.
Mommy's Little Helper

Our five year old daughter, better known as the hellion or whirling dirvish, asked if she could help paint.  It's a closet, it does not have to be perfect, it can have some brush strokes.  It took everything to say yes, knowing that there would be some clean up afterward.

It went --- long pause --- okay.  At least she looks like she had fun!  Now, if she could just read the instructions for the closet organizer.
