My Favourite Part of the Day

Life gets busy and TV, schoolwork, meetings, and work can distract families. Everyone can be distracted and disconnected.  It can be difficult to maintain connections.

Ian and I have three wonderful children and sometimes you get so busy with stuff that you forget about how important those kids are and how they truly are the reason you do just about everything in your life.  Many nights you just want them to put their pajamas on, brush their teeth and get into bed.  If they can, do it in five minutes flat, even better.

It can be a simple extra step that can put a bow on the day and it can make all the difference for everyone.  Late last year, I started taking an extra five minutes with my youngest daughter every night after the basic night time routine is complete, before the night light comes on and she has her final kiss good night.  I asked her simply, “What was your favourite part of the day?”

A little question has turned into a nightly event.  Sometimes I hear small things; matching socks, soft dog ears, two scoops of ice cream.  It can be anything.  It just has to be the one thing that made you smile, made you happy and hopefully, was your favourite part of the day.  It started as a way to end the day on a high note, to remember that the glass of our lives is truly half-full.
Slowly, I found that my two other children, who are ‘too old’ for hugs, ‘too big ‘for kisses, joined into the nightly conversation. What started as just a minute with Bronwyn before I turned out the light has become something that everyone does, takes a final moment to snuggle together in Bronwyn’s bed, and say just one thing that happened in their day.
This is us, at night saying our favourite thing.

Every night I struggle to find my favourite part of the day, because this truly is always my favourite part of the day.

What was your favourite part of the day?

Live High,
